Brunel's plan to cross the
River Severn at Fretherne 1844
The route would leave Standish Junction and head West crossing the Stroudwater Canal as well as the Berkeley Canal before heading South over the River Severn to join the South Wales Railway at Awre.
This would overcome the GWR "The Great Way Round" via Gloucester. A Canal would have been built from Fretherne to Framilode to maintain River navigation
